The dark comedy Happyish is set to premiere on Showtime later this year; the pilot starred the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Steve Coogan will take over the role.

At this year’s TCAs, Showtime president David Nevins had two pieces of good news: not only has Shameless been renewed for season 6, but Happyish has been ordered to series – again.

Showtime already gave the pilot the thumbs-up last year, but unfortunately the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman stopped production, as the iconic actor was set to star.

Now, the show finds a revival with Steve Coogan in the lead role; supporting actors Kathryn Hahn and Jason Harris are both set to reprise their roles.

Happyish follows Thom Payne (Coogan), an ageing man battling depression, and struggling to find a place in a world in which growing old is the greatest sin a person can commit.

The official description for the series reads:

“On his birthday, Thom Payne gets the gift of insignificance and also a new boss. He suspects his ED pills are interfering with his anti-depressants, leaving him with neither happiness nor… happiness. In a culture that reveres youth – a culture he helped create – Thom needs to figure out what his purpose is now that he’s halfway to death and nobody cares what he thinks. Because in a world where any Kardashian is trending up, perhaps the wise among us would heartily embrace trending down.”

Happyish is written and executively produced by This American Life‘s Shalom Auslander. Ken Kwapis serves as executive producer, and directed the pilot.

Nevins says of creator Auslander, “Shalom has a unique comedic voice. He is smart, provocative and thoughtful. I know he’s going to make viewers laugh, but he’s also going to push a few buttons while doing it.”

The new series is set to premiere on April 26, at 9:30/8:30 central.
