Did the Fantastic Beasts trailer make you cry? You can probably blame “Hedwig’s Theme” for that.

The first Fantastic Beasts trailer was an emotional roller coaster for so many fans. From the moment we saw the WB logo, so iconic for the Harry Potter films, to those last few shots where we see the Fantastic Beasts title, it was a new, exciting, crazy experience for those who have never left Harry Potter behind.

But that moment when a variation of “Hedwig’s Theme” played was the breaking point for a lot of people. It brought back memories of the original movies and reminded us that we’re once again able to experience the wizarding world on the big screen.

Should Fantastic Beasts be incorporating an iconic Harry Potter theme song in its own soundtrack, though? Of course, we don’t know for sure what the official score will sound like, but it’s possible this could be the beginning of a new theme for the wizarding world.

“Hedwig’s Theme,” after all, is synonymous with Harry Potter, with Hedwig, with the modern wizarding world. None of these aspects will be in Fantastic Beasts and so it stands to reason this song doesn’t belong in a movie about a time and characters who existed well before Harry Potter was ever the Boy Who Lived.

Fantastic Beasts should have its own, separate sound to remove it from the Harry Potter saga. Other than sharing the same universe, it doesn’t follow the same kind of story. It’s not about someone discovering their powers, but rather a story of an established wizard and his journey to document magical creatures from around the globe.

On the other hand, these stories are connected. It’s true Fantastic Beasts is a prequel, but it’s still closely tied to the wizarding world. In our world — the real world — it is a sequel of sorts in that it came after the Harry Potter films. Using “Hedwig’s Theme” feels like an homage to what came before, and if you scroll through Twitter reactions to the trailer, you’ll see how the song brought tears to the eyes of so many fans.

Besides, this is not “Hedwig’s Theme” in its original form. The tune is more colorful, the notes held longer in some places. The underlying sound is there, but it’s been changed to give us something new. Much like Fantastic Beasts, “Hedwig’s Theme” gives us a taste of what we have already experienced while simultaneously bringing us something new and fresh.

The way the theme was cut off prematurely at the end is intriguing. Was this to keep us from hearing the rest of a new Fantastic Beasts theme song? Was it show us that Harry Potter is not over, but rather has come back anew?

It’s up to you to decide — and it’s up to you to come to terms with how you feel about the use of “Hedwig’s Theme” in the Fantastic Beasts trailer. Vote in the poll and tell us your reactions in the comments below.
