Shonda Rhimes, the genius behind Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy will be guest starring on The Mindy Project sometime this fall.

Admittedly, this is a somewhat perplexing casting. Of course, the woman is heralded as a brilliant television producer, creating one of the longest-running dramas in some time, and has a strong following on Twitter, but hasn’t done much in front of the screen.

According to TV Line, who broke the news, Rhimes is a “self-proclaimed super-fan” of Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project. She will star as herself, which begs the question how will she end up in the world of Mindy Lahiri?

We wouldn’t be surprised if Mindy (Lahiri) freaks out at Rhimes’ cameo. A pop culture enthusiast, we’re sure Mindy has tried to be Olivia Pope one or two times in her life, whether it be drinking a glass of red wine (without spilling it on herself) or shouting “it’s handled!” even when it most certainly is not.

This announcement adds to the ever-growing list of guest stars coming to The Mindy Project season 3. It seems that all though it doesn’t have stellar ratings, Mindy Kaling’s star power (and the entire casts’ charisma) seems to be enough to pull in women like Rhea Perlman and Rhimes.

Over the past two seasons, the show has hosted a rotating door of men to play Mindy Lahiri’s boyfriend, from Anders Holm of Workaholics, B.J. Novak from The Office (and one of Kaling’s best friends), Mark Duplass of The League, and Glenn Howerton from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

‘The Mindy Project’ season 3 premieres on September 16 at 9:30 p.m. on Fox.
