Shonda Rhimes is gearing up to dive into the world of science fiction, and she’ll be doing so in partnership with Batman director Matt Reeves!

Netflix announced on Thursday (October 4) that Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and The Batman helmer Matt Reeves will soon be adapting Blake Crouch’s upcoming science-fiction novel Recursion for online streaming platform.

The plan is for Rhimes and Reeves to adapt the yet-to-be-released novel into a feature film and a television universe.

Set to be published by Crown on June 11, 2019, Recursion dives into what transpires after a female scientist invents powerful technology that gives people the ability to reactivate their most visceral memories and completely reinvent them. Though the new technology offers some the ability to rewrite their entire lives, in the wrong hands, the technology could upend the world as we know it.

Both Rhimes (who will be producing under her Shondaland banner) and Reeves (who will produce under 6th and Idaho) released statements expressing their excitement to work together to bring Recurision to life.

“Projects like this are why I came to Netflix. The opportunity to explore a multi-genre universe in innovative ways is extremely exciting,” said Rhimes. “Matt and Blake both have the tremendous ability to build compelling characters and imaginative landscapes and I am thrilled to work alongside them.

“Blake’s mind-bending novel presents an incredible opportunity to explore its expansive narrative simultaneously though both film and television,” said Reeves. “Netflix is uniquely suited for this ambitious undertaking and I can’t imagine a more exciting partner than the astonishingly talented Shonda Rhimes, whose work I have admired for years.”

We’ll be curious to see how Reeves and Rhimes navigate adapting the source material in both a film and television format!
