Fury Director David Ayer wanted Shia LaBeouf in Suicide Squad, but the studio didn’t think it was a good idea.

LaBeouf is best known for his iconic Even Stevens and Transformers roles and for, well, going a little crazy there for a couple years.

But he’s better now, according to a recent interview with Variety, and let me be the first to say what a relief that is. Sometimes your childhood crush never goes away.

The actor has been doing smaller films lately, and that’s a little by choice and a little because major studios aren’t looking to hire him back due to his past antics. He was a strong addition to Ayer’s Fury, but that doesn’t mean LaBeouf is back on the golden ticket.

In fact, Ayer tried to get him involved in his next project, Suicide Squad, but apparently Warner Bros. wasn’t interested in casting him.

“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me,” the actor says. “I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

It’s true that a lot was riding on Suicide Squad following the general panning of both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.

The studio was obviously hoping Suicide Squad would help them convince audiences they could make a solid superhero film in the new DC cinematic universe and they didn’t want to leave anything to chance. And LaBeouf has been a wild card as of late.

Ayer wanted him for the part of Lieutenant GQ Edwards, which eventually went to Scott Eastwood. LaBeouf saw the script well before changes were made following Will Smith’s addition to the cast, which meant the story was adjusted to give Deadshot a meatier role.

In the interview, LaBeouf talks about not being particularly fond of those big blockbuster movies anymore, so it’s uncertain whether taking the meeting with Warner Bros. was about newfound interest in franchises or out of respect and loyalty for Ayer.

Either way, it’s interesting to think about what LaBeouf could’ve brought to the table in regards to Suicide Squad.
