The actor who plays Moriarty in the hit series has spoken about the possibility of a return for the criminal mastermind, and the prospect of a guest role on Doctor Who.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the BAFTA-nominated star told reporters that it would be “very hard for Moriarty to return,” largely owing to the fact that the character blew his brains out in the exciting series 2 finale, “The Reichenbach Fall.” Then again, we saw Sherlock jump from the rooftop of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, but that didn’t stop him from mysteriously looming at his own graveside.

We’re sad to hear that he isn’t keen on starring in Doctor Who! However, his ambiguous answer leaves the door open for a return to Sherlock should Steven Moffat and co. return. Yesterday we learned that right-hand man Sebastian Moran could be Moriarty’s successor..

Andrew Scott is nominated for his performance as Moriarty at this week’s BAFTA TV Awards, where he will compete with co-star Martin Freeman for the accolade of Best Supporting Actor. Benedict Cumberbatch is also nominated for Lead Actor, and co-creator Steven Moffat will receive a Special Award.
