When the series two finale aired early this year, Sherlock fans were left desperate for answers after a nail-biting climax and a terrific cliffhanger. However, it seems that we may have to wait a long time for answers!

Speaking to the BBC Ariel magazine earlier this week, producer Beryl Vertue (whose son-in-law co-created the hit show) broke the news. From the article:

The third series of Sherlock will start filming in ‘early 2013’, according to Beryl Vertue – one of its executive producers.

Vertue, who was at the Nations and Regions Media conference in Salford earlier this week, told Ariel that it was too early to confirm transmission times for the next series.

This means that it could be up to two years before we see the popular sleuth return.  Series two was also hit by delays, after filming overran.  The news may not surprise some, as stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are currently busy shooting Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit respectively.

Are you disappointed by the news, or did you expect a long wait?
