Sherlock creator Steven Moffat says that he and co-creator Mark Gatiss are already at work on the next two series.

Though Sherlock series 4 has been certain ever since Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed it in March, today is the first time we’re hearing Moffat offer an update on more episodes.

“Rather excitingly, Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,” Moffat said during a screening of the series 3 finale titled “His Last Vow.”

“And we plotted out the whole of series four and five.”

He continued, “So we have got plans – but our plans don’t tend to be ‘Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world’ they tend to be ‘What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?’ And I think we’ve got some crackers!”

As if that weren’t enough, he believes Sherlock series 4 and series 5 may be the best yet. “The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we’ve ever had.”

While Cumberbatch and Freeman are signed on for a fourth run, it looks like they haven’t signed the dotted line for a fifth — yet.

The bigger issue at hand: Will we have to wait another two years for series 4? If their schedules have openings later this year, they could use that time to film the new Sherlock. Thus, we wouldn’t have to wait another two years for the next series.

Meanwhile, the Sherlock series 3 finale airs this Sunday on BBC One.
