PBS has confirmed that Sherlock series 3 will premiere in the United States in 2014, meaning the United Kingdom will get the show before Americans.

The network confirmed the news while announcing that Sherlock series 3 will host its first ever panel at San Diego Comic-Con with the show’s creators who also promise “surprises” at the event.

News of Sherlock series 3’s air date arriving months after it is to premiere in the United Kingdom will come as bad news to fans who were hoping to watch the show on television the same day as their British friends do. In the age of social media, it’s become harder for networks to get away with airing programs in completely different months depending on where you live because it’s hard for viewers to avoid spoilers.

As they did with Downton Abbey, Sherlock fans will have to turn to the magic of the internet to find ways to watch the show the same day it airs in the United Kingdom. Otherwise, our Tumblr dashboards will be filled with GIFs revealing to us how Sherlock survived the fall. And that’s just the start of the plot twists this season.

Benedict Cumberbatch revealed earlier this year that he was pushing for the show to air in the U.S. and U.K. simultaneously, but even the perfect looks and skills the actor possesses were seemingly not enough to convince PBS to make the right decision.

An exact air date for Sherlock series 3 has not been set, but perhaps Moffat will reveal it at San Diego Comic-Con in roughly two weeks. The U.K. will likely see it towards the end of this year. We’ll keep you updated!
