The BBC has released a slew of high-res stills from Sherlock series 3 which offer pretty looks at episode 1, “The Empty Hearse.”
The Sherlock series 3 photos, all available below, are noteworthy on many occasions. We see Watson’s love interest Mary Morstan played by his real life partner Amanda Abbington. There’s also several with interaction between Sherlock and Watson, including one where the lead detective is in the middle of what looks like a press conference. Perhaps it’s just after he’s revealed that he is indeed alive.
Characters like DI Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, and Molly are also depicted.

Not much else can be deciphered from the photographs because they’re very nondescript, but in a couple of them we do see John wearing a mustache. Most believe his mustache “phase” is before he learns that Sherlock is still alive. The character had become very depressed in the months following his good friend’s passing. Sherlock series 3 picks up two years after the climactic fall during the series 2 finale.
Episode 1 airs on New Years Day, January 1, 2014 in the United Kingdom at 9 p.m. local time. Episode 2 airs just days later on January 5, followed by episode 3 on January 12. Earlier this week we learned that a special mini episode will air on Christmas Day.
On PBS in the United States, the show will premiere in mid-January.
