The director of Sherlock series 3, episode 3 (also known as the season 3 finale) is the same person who is currently directing the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.

Nick Hurran will direct the finale, the Radio Times has learned. The episode will surely hold a monumental story line if Sherlock’s series 2 finale was any indication. The news source discovered the information after looking at Hurran’s credits at his agency. Sherlock showrunners are currently staying mum on the news.

Hurran has directed numerous Doctor Who episodes include the series 7 premiere episode “Asylum of the Daleks,” and Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill’s farewell episode “The Angels Take Manhattan.”

Sherlock series 3’s cast and crew, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson, are currently filming episode two of the three-part season. Each episode, as fans recall, runs 90 minutes in length. The first two episodes are titled “The Empty Hearse” and “The Sign of Three” respectively. The latter episode just began shooting earlier this week.

It’s safe to presume the series 3 finale, which will shoot towards the end of this year, will end with a scene that keeps fans salivating for series 4. The good news is that Cumberbatch revealed last month that he and Watson are already signed on for a fourth installment, and he hopes to continue starring in the show for as long as he can.

We presume today’s director news may not be confirmed for some time because filming is still a long ways off.

Meanwhile, we’ll get to see Hurran’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special directing work when the show airs November 23.
