The cast and crew of Sherlock series 3 have wrapped work on episode 1 and are now moving on to episode 2.

A table read of the second episode’s script, which is entitled “The Sign of Three,” was held this morning. The BBC confirmed that Colm McCarthy will direct the episode. This is the first time he’s heading a Sherlock episode, but Doctor Who fans will be interested to hear that McCarthy directed series 7 episode “The Bells of St. John.”

“The Sign of Three” is believed to be the episode in which a wedding takes place. Moffat had noted there would be a wedding when teasing the series last summer, and composer Michael Price hinted at the wedding episode on Twitter today:

Prince is referring to the three clues Moffat provided in August. They were rat, wedding, and bow.

John Watson, played by Martin Freeman, looks to be the man who’s getting married in Sherlock series 3. The production cast the role of someone who “significantly impacts upon the lives of John and Sherlock” last month. That actress is Amanda Abbington, who is Freeman’s real life partner.

The title of the episode “The Sign of Three” is a play on Sherlock novel author Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Sign of Four,” in which Watson meets Mary Morstan and later marries her.

This will be a huge episode for fans, so McCarthy has a lot of pressure on his shoulders!

There is expected to be a break between filming of episodes 2 and 3 so that Cumberbatch and Freeman can take on other responsibilities before returning to Sherlock filming later in the year.
