Sherlock series 4 finally has an air date, and the announcement comes with particularly good news for Americans!

‘Sherlock’ series 4 US, UK air date

Sherlock season 4 will air on Sunday, January 1, 2017 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. This is the first time that the series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will air simultaneously in both countries.

The first episode is titled “The Six Thatchers,” a likely reference to the classic Sherlock story “The Six Napoleans” by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Here’s some teaser art, depicting Sherlock’s broken violin:

PBS has previously taken flack for waiting to air new episodes of Sherlock weeks (or months) after they ran in the U.K. on the BBC. This delay caused many Americans to watch the episodes illegally, so as to avoid spoilers on Tumblr, Twitter, etc.

January 1, 2016 played host to the show’s first special episode, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride. The special aired simultaneously in the U.S. and U.K. like series 4 will.

The news comes just two weeks before Benedict Cumberbatch stars in his first Marvel film, Doctor Strange.

Recently Cumberbatch teased what audiences can expect in the new season — and where it will leave Sherlock and Watson. “It might be the end of an era,” he said. “It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately.”
