Sherlock season 3 had one of the best comedic episodes of the entire series, and now we’ve learned that there’s one extra bit of comedy that unfortunately got cut from “The Sign of Three.”

In Sherlock season 3, episode 2, “The Sign of Three,” Sherlock and John go on a pub crawl to celebrate John’s bachelor party and it brings us some amazing footage, along with a fantastic dubstep remix of the Sherlock theme. What we didn’t know is that there was a scene filmed that took place at a gay bar.

At a “Meet the Filmmakers” Apple Store event on Tuesday, actors Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch revealed the deleted scene. “Doing the drunk stuff was lovely,” says Freeman, “but I regret there was one bit of that drunk stuff that was missing. There was the gay club scene.”

Martin explained the scene: “We were absolutely mullered in the gay club – lots of topless men going past, and us just going ‘Why are we here?’”

Cumberbatch chimed in, stating how Sherlock felt about the situation: “I had no idea as to why they didn’t have their clothes on, and then it dawned and my grounding shook.” We can certainly imagine drunk Sherlock just looking around, dumbfounded until he realized what kind of establishment he was in, and we wish we could’ve seen it!

And if you’re upset that the scene wasn’t included in the episode, guess who you can blame? Steven Moffat. He tried to explain that there just wasn’t enough time in the episode. “The first cut of that drunk scene was interminable. It went on and on and on. You’d have been hunting me down if we’d put it all in.”

We’re pretty sure that Sherlock fans would have been delighted by a longer episode, especially if it included the gay bar scene.

Unfortunately for us, Moffat seems to think that the gay bar scene is better left on the cutting-room floor and it’ll likely not make it to the DVD extras when it’s released later this year.

Thanks, RadioTimes!
