Sherlock season 3’s premiere aired this evening on PBS, and it was the first time U.S. viewers have seen Benedict Cumerbatch in his role since May 2012!

Though Sherlock season 3 already aired in the U.K. (the finale was last Sunday), American viewers are enjoying the three 90-minute episodes for the first time beginning tonight.

The synopsis for season 3, episode 1 titled “The Empty Hearse” reads, “Two years after the devastating effects of [Series 2’s finale] The Reichenbach Fall, Dr John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance and a comforting domestic future beckon. But, with London under threat of a huge terrorist attack, Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. It’s what his best friend wanted more than anything, but for John Watson it might well be a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’! If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it though, he’s in for a very big surprise…”

PBS may release new episodes of Sherlock online beginning tomorrow, January 20. We will share a link with you once the episode is released on the internet for free streaming.
