Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are ready to take on another mystery as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in Sherlock Holmes 3.

While no director is yet attached to the film, Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures announced that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be opening in theaters on December 25, 2020. The script is penned by Chris Brancato, but there is no news on what exactly this new story will entail or if any other cast members from the first film outside of Downey and Law will be returning.

However, it’s been quite a while since Holmes and Watson have set out for a big screen adventure. It has been nearly a decade since the Sherlock Holmes franchise was in theaters. The first Sherlock Holmes film premiered back in 2009, and the sequel, A Game of Shadows, premiered in 2011.

Obviously, RDJ has been a bit preoccupied with his Marvel Cinematic Universe obligations these past few years. Jude Law has also been incredibly busy (most recently joining the Harry Potter universe as a young Albus Dumbledore), so it’s not surprising that the Sherlock Holmes franchise took a bit of a back burner.

But with the franchise kicking back up, it will be very interested to see who ends up directing this Sherlock Holmes 3. The first two films were helmed by Guy Ritchie, but it’s not clear if he’ll have time with his film obligations. He’s currently working on a live-action version of Aladdin, so we’ll have to wait and see if he’s able to work Sherlock Holmes 3 into his schedule.

We’re excited to see what adventures await us in Sherlock Holmes 3. We’ll be watching for more news on this movie as it breaks, but we’re ready for another adventure with Sherlock and Watson!
