A Shazam! movie has been on the back burner at DC for a long time. Now it’s picking up some steam, with a release date set for 2019.

If you’ve been eagerly anticipated DC Entertainment’s Shazam! project moving forward, the good news just keeps on coming.

DC have almost locked in their core cast for the movie, with Zachary Levi taking on the titular role, and Asher Angel playing Billy Batson, the young boy who transforms into Shazam when he speaks his name. Grace Fullerton remains in negotiations with her role, and rumors have pegged Mark Strong for the villain.

Dwayne Johnson had previously been locked in to portray Black Adam, but that may no longer be the case as the film moves closer to being in production. DC and Warner Bros. have yet to confirm Johnson’s continued involvement.

What they have confirmed, however, is that we should expect Shazam! to hit the big screen on April 19, 2019.

A synopsis has yet to be released by DC Entertainment or Warner Bros., but the basic plot of the film is as follows: Billy Baston is gifted with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury by the wizard Shazam, to take on the forces of evil. When Billy speaks the word “shazam,” he transforms into a superhero.

There’s no word on whether the hero will be known by his original name, Captain Marvel, or whether DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. will take a page out of the comics and attempt to avoid that potentially sticky legal situation. DC Comics officially renamed the character in 2011, when relaunching its properties.

David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) will be directing the movie, with the script being written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

The next installment in the DCEU will be Aquaman, which hits theaters on December 21, 2018. Shazam! will follow shortly after in April 2019.
