When we last left the Shannara Chronicles, Amberle was just entering the Ellcrys tree. Embarking on the first official task to save the world.

Here it is decided whether or not this girl will posses the inner fortitude to carry out the tree’s mission. (Totes normal.) The really fun part though? Is that she’ll either pass the test and be sent on a brutally epic and dangerous quest, or she’ll fail and the tree will take her life right here. Basically everything is looking real swell for Amberle Elessedil.

So she enters the tree, a supernaturally large flower blooms, and she’s sprayed with what’s basically some magically enhanced LSD.

But honestly, if you’re even remotely inside the fandom world and didn’t think this was a ‘sex-pollen’ trope come to life, then you’re doing life wrong and I’m sorry for you.

Anyway, Amberle goes on her visionquest and fights what I’m pretty sure to be the physical embodiment of the patriarchy and societal norms. First, it’s her deceased lover Lorin, who then morphs into Wil Shannara.

Both men have, for all intents and purposes, tried to ‘woo’ her. They obviously represent the struggle within herself to either a) remain an untouchable badass who slays the hearts of demons and saves the world, or b) become distracted by emotional ties to boys and how they make her feel.

Well, spoiler alert, she passes the quest by stabbing Wil in the heart and basically pledging herself to the quest. As for scrubbing out men from the face of the planet? I’m not sure. That bit was kind of unclear.

Before the Ellcrys lets Amberle go from its space-tastic LSD dreamscape, it sends her a few final flashes of confusing information: a weird heart-shaped object surrounded in fire, glimpses of the Dagda Mor and a very clear image of Wil and Eretria standing side by side under the same heart shaped stained glass.

The Ellcrys finds her worthy, releases her from the tree, and bestows a seed from its flower to preserve its future. Just as the legend said it would.

The Changeling creature from last week’s episode continues to wreak havoc within the walls of the castle, targeting Amberle even more so now that she knows she’ll truly be the one to carry the seed to the Bloodfire.

Amberle and the others have an impromptu ‘council meeting’ where she shows them the image from her vision quest. Although tempers flair, it’s actually Ander who suggests the most reasonable solution.

“Do you remember the summer you sent Aine, Arion, and me at the fort in Drey Wood? We met an elf there named Brin Catson. He told us stories of its adventures beyond the ancient elven centers, inside the Wilderun.”

So King Eventine orders his guard Crispin to escort Amberle, Wil, and Allanon to Drey Wood to meet Brin.

Meanwhile, the rovers are on a little mission of their own. Eretria has been commanded by Cephelo to sneak inside the castle to steal back the Elfstones.

Bandon confesses to Wil that when he touches people, he sees their death. And this becomes extremely important a little later. So just hold onto that tidbit.

Eretria makes her way into the castle, and then into Wil’s bed, where she promptly steals his stones (literally and figuratively) while he’s settled in for a post-coital nap.

They decide it’s best that Amberle and her posse don’t leave for Drey Wood until the Changeling creature had been vanquished. Otherwise it will continue to act as a spy for the Dagda Mor and their mission will be squashed before it starts.

Bandon bumps into Amberle’s handmaiden Catania and he sees her coming death because Eretria stabs her in the heart. After a lot of dashing around and confusion, the death is actually prevented, but Eretria is framed by the Changeling.

She’s brought to the King and locked up until an official trial can be held. But because she’s already stolen the Elfstones, and there is an actual killer on the loose, things aren’t looking good for the young girl.

Allanon has his suspicions, though. He approaches Bandon and asks him to help them get to the truth. He touches Landon’s deceased body and he sees what happened. That the one who murdered the Chosen was a shapeshifter. A Changeling.

The council meets again and this time they devise a plan to trick the creature. Of course, the one important detail they all seem to forget is that the Changeling can shift into any form it wants.

Eretria is used as bait to lure the demon out. But what the group doesn’t know is that the Changeling is fully aware of this plot and uses their ignorance against them, letting them think she’s dead, only to rise moments before being cremated.

But now that everyone is under the impression that the spy has been sniffed out, it’s time for the crew to head to Drey Wood to meet Brin Catson.

Before setting off, however, there’s one slight adjustment to who will be embarking on the journey. Allanon confronts Amberle, stating that he knows she saw Eretria and Wil both during her vision quest inside the Ellcrys. Listen to what the tree is telling you, princess, he says, insisting that the three are tied together in some important way and that the Ellcrys is trying to guide her in the right direction.

So as the episode ends, Crispin, Amberle, Wil, and a handcuffed Eretria set off on their next leg of the quest.

Join us next week as we recap Shannara Chronicles episode 5, “Reaper,” which airs Tuesday, January 26 at 10 p.m. on MTV.
