Nine years removed from taking the indie film world by storm with his 2004 time travel film Primer, Shane Carruth has released a bizarre teaser trailer for his sophomore feature film, Upstream Color.

As we reported last week, the film is set to premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. The synopsis is as follows:

A man and woman are drawn together entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.

The trailer is hauntingly atmospheric, completely bizarre, and definitely a head scratcher, but from the mind behind one of the most original, mind-boggling indie films of the past decade, we’d expect little else. Take a look below:

While the trailer offers very little information on what exactly we can expect from the film, it’s the atmosphere and imagery that have us excited, not to mention Shane Carruth.

You can take a look at the poster, as well:

In addition to writing and directing Upstream Color, Carruth also stars alongside Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig and Thiago Martins. The film is set to hit theaters on April 5, 2013. We’re definitely intrigued!
