Equal pay for equal work, right? That’s what one major TV star is after right now. We’re learning today that Shameless’ Emmy Rossum is in a big contract negotiation with Showtime as she tries to get a raise that bumps her above William H. Macy.

Update (December 14): Looks like Showtime and Emmy have come to an agreement! The actress tweeted Wednesday morning:

Given the information below, it sounds like her salary either matches or now surpasses Macy’s.

Original story (December 9): The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Rossum, who’s currently paid less than Macy despite having the biggest role on the show, is “locked in a pay standoff” for Shameless season 8. The negotiations have held the network back from announcing a renewal since its future is in limbo.

The actress is reportedly “not only seeking salary parity with co-star William H. Macy, [but] multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter she is taking the position she should be paid more per-episode than Macy makes after years of earning much less than her Emmy-nominated co-star.”

Macy is already set for Shameless season 8, and his latest salary bump is “in the upper echelon of cable dramas.”

The actor, who plays Frank Gallagher, has always had the highest salary on Shameless due to his “extensive film resume and an Oscar nomination for his role in Fargo.” But Rossum is now looking to change things around set.

If Rossum doesn’t get a deal she’s happy with, “Showtime could choose to renew the show without her or cancel it,” THR writes. Since it’s one of the top five dramas in the coveted 18-49 demographic, we doubt the pay cabler will want to cancel it. They could write out Fiona, but that would be terrible. Fiona can’t leave before Frank! The latter’s had way too many brushes with death to get away with lasting longer in the series than his daughter.

Shameless season 7 will air its penultimate episode this Sunday before the finale airs December 18. Will it be the season finale or the series finale? Watch this space! And good luck, Emmy!
