Divergent actress Shailene Woodley isn’t a fan of the relationship between Edward and Bella in the Twilight series.

New on Hypable: 11 times the Twilight cast hated Twilight more than you.

In a new interview with Teen Vogue for a cover story on the rising actress, Woodley says the vampire series penned by Stephenie Meyer holds a “toxic” relationship between the two lead characters.

“Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship,” she says. “She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself. What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”

Woodley’s comments echo thoughts shared by others in the reading community who question the Twilight series’ story, but what’s interesting is that the actresses’ words come at a time when she’s launching a YA book-to-film adaptation of her own.

Divergent opens in theaters next Friday, March 21, and while there’s no doubt that the series is nothing like Twilight, we hope vampire fans aren’t too turned off by the remarks.

Woodley’s new YA series, originally authored by Veronica Roth, tells a story that the actress can get behind. In various interviews over the past year the 23-year-old has admired Divergent’s relevance in today’s society. “After reading the book I was really profoundly moved. [The book is] very metaphorical for things that are going on today,” she said in January of last year. “Specifically things that I’m passionate about, and things I want to make public, and things I want to educate people on. So I think it’s a really great platform.”
