Divergent star Shailene Woodley had a blunt answer when asked if she’d be returning for the fourth and final(-ish) installment.

“No,” she told Vanity Fair this week. “I’m not going to be on the television show.”

Okay then!

This is the first time she’s definitively answering whether or not she’ll return for Ascendant. Remember, Lionsgate is adapting the back half of Veronica Roth’s Allegiant for television and hopes it’ll serve as a backdoor pilot to a spinoff series. It was originally slated to be a theatrical release — Until Insurgent and Allegiant puled poor box office numbers.

In September, Woodley was uncertain about continuing but left the door open. “Out of respect to the studio and everyone in involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show,” she said.

In December, Theo James followed in Shai’s footsteps, hinting he was uninterested in returning for Ascendant. Miles Teller also said he doesn’t want to be involved. The actors have the option to run away because their contracts called for each of the films to be released theatrically.

Between the challenges of recasting many of the characters and trying to put a captivating story together that’ll win back longtime fans, Lionsgate may be better off just putting Divergent out to pasture. It’s too bad — If they never split Veronica Roth’s Allegiant into two books, the series would’ve successfully walked into the dystopian sunset two years ago.

There is a bright side: Some may see this as sweet justice for that plot twist Veronica Roth put at the end of Allegiant. Not everyone loved it, though Shailene was a fan.
