Shailene Woodley has finally spoken publicly about her character being cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2, and confirms that she will most likely not be in the third film.

It was quite the buzz when Shailene Woodley’s character was cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2, but word was that the studio simply felt it wasn’t the right time to introduce her character, Mary Jane Watson. Now Shailene Woodley has revealed exactly why she was cut from the film, and more importantly that she might not be involved in any future Spider-Man films.

Woodley was understandably disappointed by the decision back when it originally came out that her character was cut from the film, telling EW via e-mail, “Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

Sony and producers looked at what stories they could tell in 3 and 4 and wanted to introduce Mary Jane at a later time to focus more on her. Now knowing that Woodley only had four scenes in Amazing Spider-Man 2, it’s easy to understand why the studio made the decision.

In the video, thanks to Movies, she explains that while she believes the film’s script to be the best she’s ever read, she doesn’t imagine she’ll be coming back for any future films involving the character.

She continued saying that the scenes shot would look different since Amazing Spider-Man 3 would be shot many years from now, that they wouldn’t match up.

She also felt that Sony didn’t wish to introduce such a pivotal character into Peter Parker’s storyline while they were already introducing many new characters. Woodley seems to think it was a wise choice.

So do we, especially considering there may end up being three villains in Amazing Spider-Man 2. The Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, and Green Goblin, played by Dane DeHaan. Plus, the sequel won’t open in theaters until May 2, 2014.

We’re surprised to hear that it seems like it’s already a done deal that she won’t be returning. But it’s not entirely surprising considering how unavailable Woodley will be due to the future filming of the Divergent films and the many other projects that she’s currently working on. We imagine Mary Jane will now be recast and show up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 accordingly.

Are you surprised to see Woodley so at ease about her character being cut from the film? Or does it appear as though she’s simply so busy that it was more of a bump in the road of her career and she’s happy to have had the opportunity to experience a large production.

In other Amazing Spider-Man 2 news, today we received some interesting footage from the film, which featured Jamie Foxx as the villain, Electro, as he delivers a great monologue and looks quite menacing. Be sure to check out the latest Spider-Man coverage from Comic-Con.
