Shadowhunters episode 1×13 was action packed and didn’t disappoint with shocking moments. When does season 2 start again?

The finale of Shadowhunters deviated from the book in all the best ways. As a book reader, I was surprised by the story we saw, but loved where it took us. There are so many things that can happen looking ahead to season 2, but first let’s talk about Jace’s turn to the dark side and all the things that happened in the season finale.

Alec faces down his parents and evidently the biggest issue they have with his choice isn’t that he kissed a boy and liked it, but that he kissed Magnus Bane. Evidently Magnus is a lothario according to Robert; seriously they couldn’t find a better word? Alec stood strong against them insisting he would get to know everything about Magnus.

Magnus and Alec discuss the awkward family moment briefly and decide to go on a real date. They also decide to thank Lydia for what she did for them which leads to the discovery that she has been assaulted. Alec uses her healing rune to revive her and discovers Hodge betrayed them.

We then get a glimpse into Valentine’s mad cap scheme. Evidently the Mortal Cup can purify blood which then changes humans into Shadowhunters. Valentine swears to destroy the Clave, but he wants Clary and Jace first. Hodge is surprised by this request but even more surprised when Valentine says he won’t allow Hodge to stay with him. Poor Hodge, betrays everyone who trusts him for nothing. Some people just don’t think things through.

Jace decides to throw his own pity party because Valentine raised him. He feels he is bad because of his childhood. Jace and Alec set out to find Hodge and the Mortal Cup. Jace calls Luke to have the pack help search for Hodge. Unfortunately for Hodge, Jace is the first to find him and it doesn’t end well. Jace, still a rage monster, fights Hodge and cuts off his hand ala Star Wars. He would have killed him but Alec and Luke arrive just in time. Jace then picks up the ring from Hodge’s discarded hand and contacts Valentine.

After his talk with Valentine, Jace takes Hodge so he can find out where Valentine is and he threatens to kill him. Jace is quickly drifting into dangerous territory. He has lost control of who he is and is allowing the thought of Valentine being his father to dictate his actions. No good can come of this.

Simon sets a meeting with Raphael to get the book of the white but he is less than helpful. Simon decides to go rogue and sneaks Clary in to see Camille. Isabelle is supposed to be the distraction, but it doesn’t work so well.

Raphael threatens to kill Simon and Camille but Isabelle saves them. Camille says she has the book but she requires a pardon from Simon so the Clave can’t try her. She takes them to Magnus to get the contract. Of course, Camille can’t help but cause a little trouble. She realizes Magnus is in love with someone else and kisses him just as Alec walks in. This does not go over well. I really liked Magnus’ attempt to call Camille crazy and Isabelle’s blatant threat to destroy her for hurting Alec.

Valentine goes after Clary, Magnus, Alec and Isabelle in order to get back at Jace. Valentine gives Jace an ultimatum — join me or your friends die. Jace, of course, goes with Valentine. They are raising a new breed of Shadowhunters on a ship. Book readers know that ship comes into play in the second book in a major way. It will be interesting to see if they incorporate it into the second season.

Back at the Institute, Alec and Magnus are discussing Camille’s comments. Alec is stuck on the fact that Magnus will live forever and watch him grow old. It makes him uncomfortable and you can see the challenges ahead of the newly formed couple.

Lastly, Jocelyn is finally woken up. Luke catches her and she and Clary hug, then the episode ends.

There were so many great moments in this finale and I am dying to know where they go next. In the books Jocelyn isn’t woken up at this point so it will be interesting to see what she will be given as a story line. It will also be interesting to see where they take Jace because his character just got a whole lot more complicated.
