Hypable’s Shadowhunters Worry Report wraps up who we’re concerned about, who is on the fringe, and whose story arc is just too devastating to even think about. Join us as we panic.

Welcome back to the Shadowhunters Worry Report 3B edition. Each week, we rank the characters we feel are on the brink of a breakdown, whose days are numbered, or who we simply cannot look at without feeling some butterflies in our stomach.

‘Shadowhunters’ Worry Report 3×16

After an incredible outing for the entire cast in Shadowhunters season 3, episode 16, “Stay With Me,” choosing the top five characters to worry about became a nearly impossible task. Monumental moments are approaching for several characters. But each of these moments also brings with it the possibility of going incredibly wrong.

Shadowhunters does not shy away from presenting these characters with impossible situations. Instead, they throw everything possible at them and we, as viewers, are privy to witness their strength grow or collapse in the face of battle.

Where our heroes cannot rise, others step in to lift them up. “Stay With Me” was a strong outing for Simon, Alec, and Clary to face their personal demons head on. But they did so with the strength of their friends and family right behind them. It was these performances that made ranking the impending doom and gloom extra tedious this week.

Below are the somewhat equally-tied contenders for the Worry Report. As always, there were some runners-up, including: Simon, who watched Cain look him in the eye and cower in Lilith’s presence; Jace, who not only has to carry the weight of watching Clary struggle with her battle with Jonathan, but now has Alec preparing to prose to Magnus; and Lilith, who we know we should not care about, but now that Cain is in tow, a heated showdown in Edom might be on the horizon.

5. Luke

Luke may be out of jail. but he is now indebted to the Praetor. I’d like to say that Luke working in service to a group of people who in turn protect others is good for him. That spending his days in a jail cell and attempting to isolate himself from others (and getting beat up physically by other cell mates) is not the best way for him to grow from his past. However, Praetor Scott, head of the Praetor Lupus, does not instill a sense of calm in his first meeting with Luke.

The Praetor guardians are charged with protecting those who pose a threat — think Heidi and Simon when he had the Mark of Cain. Luke is a natural fit for this type of job. However, the oath of the Praetor is no joke and cannot be broken once a mission is assigned. What type of assignment will the organization issue to Luke? My money is on something that will make him continue to question his freedom.

4. Simon

Normally, I like to keep these focused on where we leave things before the credits roll. In the case of Simon, this would leave him far off the list of concern save for some trouble getting the taste of demon blood out of his mouth. But there is no way to ignore the trailer and his undercover mission in the sneak peek from episode 17, “Heavenly Fire.”

Simon has a good head on his shoulders and plenty of experience watching Jace, Clary, and Isabelle interact with other Shadowhunters. He’ll be well-prepped to gather information. Since he is going undercover as a vampire, he won’t have to worry about his teeth, but he may have to worry about his cheeky sense of humor.

Will Simon be able to get out of the Project Heavenly Fire?

3. Alec

I’m trying very hard to allow myself to get wrapped up in the romance and whimsy of Alec asking Maryse for the family ring. I want to be excited for the pair to live in Magnus’ fantasy where Alec has all the moves and Magnus has magic that does not interfere with their happiness, and the only obstacles in their way are the couches in the living room.

While Alec has pulled Magnus back from the brink of immediate physical danger, emotional instability is still a cause for concern. Alec faces Magnus and sees the man he loves. Magnus faces Magus and sees a shell of the warlock that one was. The pair needs to reconcile with the major changes that have just taken place. It is the only sure-fire way to adapt and grow together.

Is Alec going to ask Magnus to marry him too early? Yes. Is Magnus going to break his heart? Probably. Even if Magnus says yes, there is going to be a looming issue that needs to be dealt with before the two can carry one another into the next phase of their life together.

2. Clary

Jonathan hanging from the Institute ceiling in full Lecter chains is not enough to quell the feeling that something is about to go horribly wrong for Clary. The main reason being that the connection between Clary and Jonathan has only grown stronger over the last few episodes. Although their physical proximity has little to do with how the runes work, now that Jonathan is inside the Institute, the pair will be interacting much more in person.

Why? Because Clary cannot stay away. She needs answers. Both Clary and Jonathan are curious about their connection — how it works, what level of control the other has. Up until this point, Jonathan appears to be the dominant force in their connection.

Hot off the heels of raising the Queen of Hell, Clary is ready to stop at nothing to figure out what Jonathan’s plans for the Morningstar sword are. As Isabelle and Simon work to gather intel on Glorious, I’m concerned that Clary might unintentionally unravel their progress as she and Jonathan become even more closely intertwined.

1. Magnus

This is not a surprise, right? Magnus is right back where he started at the beginning of 3B’s run. Only this time, he has just suffered a traumatic life-or-death event, has no apartment to call his own, and did not give up magic out of sacrifice, but necessity. It did not seem like he had much choice in the matter. Magnus was hesitant to give up his newly reclaimed powers, even though it meant that he might accidentally kill himself if he tried to use them.

We’ve heard Magnus wax poetic about how he is inherently tied to magic, how it is a part of him. And that was true of his magic, the magic that is currently holding Lilith prisoner in Edom. Lorenzo’s magic is not Magnus’ magic and separating the two is going to be a realization that Magnus needs to come to terms with.

That last bit of information is why I am mostly concerned for Magnus after episode 16. We saw the deal he made with Lorenzo, how easily he could give up a place he was connected to. What type of deal could be in the future for him if he goes off in search of magic through another means?

Piggy-backing off of our concern for Alec, Magnus may also have to crush Alec’s heart. He is not in an emotionally fit state to face himself in a mirror. How could Magnus be comfortable promising away a version of himself that even he does not know?

Shadowhunters season 3, episode 17, “Heavenly Fire,” airs Monday, April 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET on Freeform.
