For the past five episodes, Shadowhunters has been slowly introducing us to the Circle and its nefarious leader, Valentine. We hope this episode, “Of Men and Angels,” gives us more insight into Valentine’s plan.
This episode of Shadowhunters features Jocelyn, Valentine, and Luke in a series of flashbacks. In order to help Clary remember where the Mortal Cup is located, Luke begins to tell her the tale of her mother and father. Here are five things we hope the flashbacks give us more information about.
Who was Jocelyn Fairchild?
I think we have an understanding of who Jocelyn Fray is, the mother who would give up anything to save her daughter, but Jocelyn Fairchild is a mystery. There have been few details about who Jocelyn was before she left the Circle and pretended to be a Mundane. What was she like as a shadowhunter? We got a sneak peek of her fighting skills and clearly Jocelyn was a badass, so why did she give it all up? These are the questions we hope the flashbacks answer about Jocelyn.
How did Luke become a werewolf?
It’s clear Luke was not always a werewolf, so how did he become one? Luke knew Jocelyn when she was with Valentine, if not before, so there are sure to be some interesting details about their relationship revealed. Luke is, after all, guiding the flashbacks to help Clary remember where the Mortal Cup is, so here’s hoping we get more information about that too! There is little known about Luke’s back story so far, except that he knew about Clary being a shadowhunter and he was with Jocelyn in the Circle.
Who is Valentine Morgenstern?
We know nothing about Valentine other than he is Clary’s father and Jocelyn ran from him. So who is Valentine really? He clearly has charisma that draws people to follow him but why did he start a group outside the shadowhunter world? He is probably the character we know the least about, so here’s to hoping we learn more about his back story through the flashbacks.
What is Valentine’s plan?
Our current look at Valentine in his creepy hideaway doesn’t give us much to work with. He looks like a mad scientist and we have no clue what he is actually doing. Hopefully this flashback will give us more information about what Valentine plans to do with the Mortal Cup and why he is constantly injecting people with things. Out of all the storylines, this one is the least clear and it is hardest to follow. Hopefully we will learn more about what Valentine’s game plan is and why the hell he is in Chernobyl.
What was the purpose of Circle, then and now?
We know very little about the Circle as it is now, except that members were marked with a specific rune and can’t actually discuss Valentine. So what are they doing now? And, more importantly, what was the plan when they were first started? Who were the members of the Circle? We know Jace’s father, as well as Clary’s mom and Hodge were all members of the Circle. What other shadowhunters might have been involved? Right now that Circle is just a mysterious group of people who were banished by their own kind for doing something terrible, maybe in the flashbacks we will finally learn just what that was all about.
