After years of anxiously waiting for word on Legendary’s hopeful tentpole Seventh Son to come about – originally titled The Spook’s Apprentice – the trailer has finally been released.

Joseph Delaney, author of The Last Apprentice (or The Spook’s Apprentice for U.K. fans) initially posted a mention of the film on his blog in 2008, citing a greenlit film for a 2009 release, but multiple Hollywood roadblocks set the production back years.

Changing directors plagued the young adult film. According to Delaney’s blog, Kevin Lima, director of the Amy Adams’ charmer Enchanted, was originally meant to helm the Warner Brothers distributed film, but was instead taken over by Sergey Bodrov (Tim Burton was also a rumored candidate).

Changing screenwriters also halted the project. IMDb credits Matt Greenberg, screenwriter of 1408, with writing the ‘previous screenplay,’ only to be handed off to Charles Leavitt, of Blood Diamond fame, and Max Borenstein, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Godzilla remake, which shares fellow Seventh Son production company Legendary Pictures.

On top of that, VFX house Rhythm & Hues had to seek a $5 million loan that would cover the costs to finish Seventh Son amidst the company filing for bankruptcy.

After all of this, and years of waiting, Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures have finally released the first trailer and several posters for the upcoming feature film.

Starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian), Julianne Moore, and Game of Thrones’ relentless Night’s Watch steward Kit Harington, this film – slated for a January 17th, 2014 release in theaters and Imax 3D – follows the life of a seventh son of a seventh son (Barnes) in the 18th century as he attempts to fight alongside his master (played by Bridges) to battle demonic spirits, including a relentless witch (played by Moore).

Via Warner Brothers’ Twitter account, a steady stream of posters have been released, including ones highlighting Bridges as the Spook, Vikander as the good witch Alice, and Harington.

Seventh Son will be attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con during Legendary’s panel.

Seventh Son and Godzilla are two of the last movies the company will distribute with Warner Brothers before the two studios part ways. They will be shown on July 20 in Hall H.
