Since learning that Netflix is teaming up with Lemony Snicket for a new television series based on A Series of Unfortunate Events, everyone has been eager to hear more.

Update: Netflix confirms to Hypable that the trailer is indeed fan-made. But… but… it’s so good!

People lost their minds when the book-to-television series was announced in November, but we haven’t heard a peep about Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events series since then. The agony!

So it’s no surprise that everyone on the internet started losing their minds again when an apparent teaser trailer for A Series of Unfortunate Events surfaced online over the weekend. To add to everyone’s hype levels, the trailer is really great. It’s the perfect amount of creepy and has lots of great references to Snicket’s beloved book series like appearances from the Lachrymose Leeches, the shadow of Count Olaf, and a book titled “How to Start Fires” (a reference to the Baudelaire Fire?).

Watch below:

Great, right? There’s just one problem: We don’t think this is an official trailer because there are multiple clues suggesting otherwise:

  1. It was not released by Netflix on their social media channels.
  2. The source of the video appears to be a random YouTube account under the name Eleanora Poe, which is a character in A Series of Unfortunate Events who’s the Editor in Chief at The Daily Punctilio.
  3. It’s unlike Netflix to release a teaser trailer for a television series this far in advance. We don’t have a director for the series, nor do we have cast members or a release date.
  4. It was released during the 4th of July holiday weekend.. the worst time to get people to notice your new video on the internet.

Then again, it’d be perfectly in line with the themes of A Series of Unfortunate Events for Netflix to release an official trailer on a random YouTube account over a holiday weekend, wouldn’t it? Hmmm.

We have an e-mail in to Netflix to see if this trailer is real or not. No matter the truth, what’s certain is that whoever made this video did a really great job. If this is fan-made, we hope the student got an “A+” on their video editing assignment!

Do you think the ‘Series of Unfortunate Events’ trailer is legit?
