Serenade by Emily Kiebel is about Lorelei, who not only has to deal with the death of her father, but must come to terms with being a siren.

At school, Lorelei’s life is pretty typical. She’s a classically trained soprano, has a good relationship with her dad and a so-so one with her mom, and simply dreams of following her heart.

But everything goes horribly wrong in the blink of an eye when her father is killed in a car accident. With her world turned upside down, Lorelei seeks refuge with members of her family she just found out existed.

Her mysterious aunt Helen accepts her into her home, and Lorelei soon finds out that she’s a siren, a mythological creature whose duty it is to sing doomed sailors to their death. But Lorelei plays with fate when she rescues a sailor instead of killing him and ultimately finds herself attracted to the man.

‘Serenade’ book review

The highlight of Serenade by Emily Kiebel is the way in which the author plays with the idea of an ancient and legendary creature living in the modern world while still performing the duties for which it has always been responsible. The sirens in Serenade are not exactly what you might remember from Greek mythology, but they’re certainly a captivating version that introduces its own twist on the tale.

And sirens are not the only beings to exist in this world. We won’t spoil the surprise, but a few other myths make their way into the story, expanding the universe and making us wonder what else could exist in possible future installments of this series.

With an author who studied classical music in college and continues to sing professionally, the aspects of the book that touch on Lorelei’s passion for singing are well-constructed and undeniably realistic. Singers and musicians alike will certainly love the powerful effect song has on the characters in this book.
