One would imagine that a film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper would be hitting your local theaters in a big way, but that’s not the case with Serena. The film will be released early on iTunes and on-demand on February 26.
A month before its theatrical release, March 27, Serena will be available for home viewing via iTunes and on-demand services. This comes after nearly a dozen delays due to the film’s director, and her attempt to create the “perfect edit.”
Back in September it was reported that, “There were no reshoots or anything like that, it was just a real precision edit because the story is about a woman’s descent into madness. And Susanne is a total perfectionist.” Check out the film’s latest trailer below:
The film’s director, Susanne Bier, filmed Serena in the same timespan that Lawrence and Cooper filmed Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. Those two films were incredibly popular, and made multiple appearances in the last two award seasons.
With two Academy Award nominated actors, one would think that a wide distribution wouldn’t be an afterthought, but it seems that the studio believes releasing the film early via on-demand and iTunes will benefit it in some way.
The film’s synopsis: “North Carolina mountains at the end of the 1920s – George and Serena Pemberton, love-struck newly-weds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pembertons’ passionate marriage begins to unravel leading toward a dramatic reckoning.”
Serena will be available to watch on iTunes and on-demand February 26, with the film hitting theaters (and hopefully gaining publicity) when it hits theaters March 27. Will you be watching when it’s available online?
