Another great episode of Selfie, and another reason to be upset by its premature cancellation. Let’s recap season 1, episode 7, “Here’s This Guy.”

If you haven’t yet heard, ABC has chosen to cancel Selfie after a rocky ratings start.

Series creator Emily Kapnek has made an effort to honour the fans who have stood by the show – and twice during the episode, social media handles of these fans popped up on screen. Much appreciated, Emily!

A friendship bracelet for the digital world

Eliza (Karen Gillan) and Henry (John Cho)’s friendship is thriving, at least from Eliza’s perspective.

While she has many friends online, she has now come to realise that, “In the real world, I only have one.” (Although we beg to differ: Charmonique is pretty friend-like too, no?)

Henry gives her a landline phone, which is basically his way of saying they’re BFFs 4eva.

He also wants to teach her how to read the phone book, which, okay, is kind of like learning a dead language. But still.

Eliza’s big day

Eliza’s bliss is cut short, however, when she meets Julia (Allison Miller), whom Henry labels, “a gentlewoman I’m courting.” We have to say, Henry and Julia’s way of speaking to each other might be the funniest thing in the show yet.

But Eliza not happy about this development. If Henry’s life suddenly doesn’t revolve around her anymore, obviously that’s a bad habit that needs to be broken.

In the laundry room, Bryn (Allyn Rachel) gives Eliza some advice about friendships, and how significant others can come between them. And confirming Eliza’s fears, Henry asks Eliza to cut down on their sessions.

Then, Saperstein (David Harewood) stops by and makes our lives a little better. He asks Eliza to introduce their keynote speaker at a pharmaceutical convention, to “grab people’s attention.”

Now, she needs Henry more than ever – just when he’s otherwise distracted. Dun dun dunnn!

Henry cuts the cord

Henry tries to prioritise Julia over Eliza, to avoid jealousy. It’s the classic question: can women and men be platonic friends? And the answer is yeah, maybe, but Henry and Eliza probably can’t.

When Henry finds out that Eliza has been working to sabotage Julia by leaving her bad reviews, he goes to confront her. And the scene is just a little bit heartbreaking.

“You’re not the sun, the world does not revolve around you,” he tells her, before he walks away. And sorry Eliza, but the “I’m not sorry” t-shirt you’re wearing was probably not the most appropriate apparel…

Inspired by Bryn’s efforts to win her old friend back with cake, Eliza bakes the world’s most inappropriate cake for Julia. Yep, that’s the digestion system. Eating it would be kinda meta, no?

But when she goes to deliver it, a magical little girl teaches her to be the Courageous Kitty (errr?), and she decides that she can handle the pharmaceutical conference alone.

Keep Calm and Eat Cake

Henry sees the cake, and admits to his friendship with Eliza – only to find out that Julia could care less. “I myself have throngs of male cohorts,” she hilariously tells him.

At the conference, Eliza pulls through with the immortal words: “Thank you. And now, this guy.” And Henry is there to witness her great triumph.

In the final scene, Eliza goes to see Julia, and comes to the logical conclusion that she herself is the bigger person. Which we’re willing to bet that Julia would agree with.

What did you think about ‘Selfie’ season 1, episode 7?

We’ll get back to you on how many episodes we have left, but right now, it looks like ABC is planning to air at least episodes 8 and 9 out of the total 13.
