The third episode of Selfie, “A Little Yelp From My Friends,” managed to keep Eliza (Karen Gillan) and Henry (John Cho) separated most of the time, and yet it still focused mainly on their friendship.

Sam Saperstein (David Harewood) made a triumphant return, with a new strategy for increasing productivity in the office: they have to start feeling like a family.

Saperstein has the team rate the person next to them on a “closeness scale.” Henry gets a nine from Larry (Brian Huskey), while Eliza gets a zero from Joan (Jennifer Hasty) – not that she notices, as she’s busy with her phone as always.

In the break room, Henry tries to illustrate to Eliza how easy it is to make friends, and uses Larry as an example. That’s gonna come back to bite him, but more on that later.

In case you needed a refresher course on how to make polite conversation, Henry helpfully supplies us with the following: when making small talk, take your cues from the other person. (Is it just me, or does Selfie try to subtly educate its audience? I like it!)

Eliza accepts Henry’s challenge, and sets out to learn everything she can about Joan, the only way she knows how: the internet.

With Charmonique (Da’Vine Joy Randolph)’s help, she discovers that Joan is a super-reviewer on Yelp. She follows Joan to her weekly cardio class, and proceeds to have a classic Monica moment, freestyling wildly while the others perform a practiced choreography.

Joan isn’t suspicious yet (we kind of judge her for that), and Eliza manages to invite herself back to her house.

But maybe remembering Joan’s husband’s oregano allergy was taking it a bit too far (by the way, we wish we had Eliza’s mad memorizing skills). Joan and her husband realise what’s going on, which leads Eliza to an important revelation: she is genuinely sorry for deceiving them.

Ironically, while Eliza is working her butt off trying to connect to Joan, Henry is doing everything in his power to get rid of Larry.

Larry considers Henry his friend, and when he has a falling out with his wife, Saperstein insists that Henry take care of his “bestie” (because he stood near him at the microwave that one time).

Henry grudgingly allows Larry to stay with him, and when Larry decides to win his wife back with a flashmob, he is desperate enough to go along with it.

What Henry doesn’t know (and how would he?!) is that Larry is obsessed with flashmobs. “Do you have any idea how many flashmobs Larry is responsible for?” Charmonique tells him, showing him the YouTube log. It’s a lot, apparently.

Henry accidentally voices his frustration about Larry to Eliza, and Larry overhears… and Henry realises that he isn’t actually making an effort to make friends.

In the touching final scene, Eliza admits to Henry that she eats standing up because at school, no one would ever sit with her at lunch. Henry brings a trash can into his office so they can eat lunch over it together.

And Eliza realises that the two of them are actually, genuinely friends. Well… a six and five out of 10, anyway. But it’s a start.
