The life story of Mexican-American music icon, Selena, is officially heading to the small screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has given a straight to series order for a new television series focusing on the life of late Tejano music legend, Selena Quintanilla.

Titled Selena: The Series, the upcoming series is being described as a coming-of-age story and will be made in partnership with Campanario Entertainment.

It’ll be written and executive produced by Moises Zamora, whose previous credits include Star and American Crime. Other producers on the project include Jamie Davila, Rico Martinez, and Simran A. Singh.

There’s currently no word on how many episodes the series will be comprised of, or how long the runtime for each episode will be.

Fans of Selena can rest easy knowing that the new Netflix show has the blessing of the Quintanilla family, who will also be involved with the project behind the scenes. Specifically, the “Como La Flor” singer’s sister (Suzette Quintanilla) and father (Abraham Quintanilla Jr.) will serve as executive producers on the series.

Following the announcement of the new show, Suzette Quintanilla released a statement that shed a bit more light on what we can expect from the new Netflix series.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel a great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” said Quintanilla. “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highly why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tackled Selena’s story. Back in 1997 — just two years after the Tejano artist was shot and killed by her best friend and manager for her fan club — the Quintanilla family worked with Warner Bros. to bring Selena’s life story to the big screen.

Jennifer Lopez famously portrayed the late singer in the ’90s biopic, which told the story of Selena’s rise to fame up until her tragic death at the age of 23.

The film actually does a pretty good job of hitting all the key milestones in Selena’s life. That being said, we could definitely see how a fully fleshed out series has the potential to dive into some aspects of the singer’s life the film glosses over, such as her passion for fashion design.

Mostly, we’re curious to find out who Netflix and the family will cast to play Selena during different parts of her life!

Currently, there’s no word on when the series will premiere on Netflix.
