Last week’s elimination of Paul Jolley means this year’s winner will be a new sort of Idol: the reign of the WGWGs is over.

There has been much complaint over the last few years that there has been too little variety among the Idol victors, and these complaints aren’t unfounded. David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, and most recently, Phillip Phillips: the winners of the past five seasons of American Idol have all been white men. And though each artist of course has his own style, there have been a lot of dudes with guitars.

In fact, the term “WGWG” (White Guys With Guitars) has been a joke thrown around quite a bit in the Idol fandom in recent years, regarding the Idol winners. The uproar seemed to reach its peak with last year’s crowning of Phillips, as five white guys with guitars in a row seemed too much for some fans to handle.

However, the same people that complain about the repetition of WGWGs winning year after year are the same people with the power to change it. The Idol victor is chosen by America’s votes. It’s not like the competition is stacked with WGWGs: last season’s second and third place finalists, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet, were both incredible vocalists, fan favorites, and most notably, not white guys with guitars.

This season, Paul Jolley was the only white male to make it into the top ten. His elimination means that there will be a change of the guard on the Idol stage this year. America’s votes have chosen a different winner, with a different look, and a different sound. With five strong female competitors left in the competition, Idol may see its first female winner since Jordin Sparks in season 6.

Are you excited for a new Idol victor? Are you sick of white guys with guitars?
