ITV is bringing Frankenstein’s monster back to life in The Frankenstein Chronicles, which will star Sean Bean of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings fame.

Riding on the Sherlock wave, ITV has ordered a six-part crime miniseries retelling the classic Frankenstein stories by Mary Shelley.

Deadline reports that actor Sean Bean has been cast in the lead role – which is not Doctor Frankenstein.

Written by Barry Langford and directed by Benjamin Ross, The Frankenstein Chronicles puts a new spin on the old tale: the series will center on Inspector John Marlott, to be played by Bean.

Part horror, part crime drama, the series is described as, “A thrilling and terrifying re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth.”

It is set in 1827 London, where Inspector Marlott is recruited to investigate a series of grotesque murders, where the victims appear to be assembled of various body parts.

And as he begins to delve deeper into the mystery, “Marlott discovers that what he’s dealing with is more horrific than he could possibly have imagined.”

But the miniseries will tackle more than just the Frankenstein story. “Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London,” Benjamin Ross reveals in a press release.

“He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one-way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario.”

Filming will begin in Northern Ireland in January 2015. No other actors have yet been announced for the project. Do you have any suggestions for who should play Frankenstein and his monster?
