Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is trying to make waves by giving fans as much as they can before the movie hits theatres. Today, they released a great portrait of Percy and his sword, Riptide.

The official Facebook page states, “The gods have handed down the Sea of Monsters Compendium, featuring characters, items, monsters and locations from Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters! The first compendium entry is none other than the Son of Poseidon, Perseus Jackson.”

It looks as if we could be getting quite a few stills of characters and interesting shots from the movie over the next several months, before Sea of Monsters opens up in theatres on August 7.

The fandom has been divided, however, since the first movie was such a flop. Fans of the series complained it was too different from the books and said the characters were aged up too much. In the first book, The Lightening Thief, Percy is supposed to be 12 years old. In the movie, he was closer to 16.

Complaints have already been seen from fans that wanted something much closer to the book, as it does say, “And a Half-Blood of the eldest gods shall reach twenty against all odds.” In the novel, the prophecy states that the Half-Blood would reach 16 against all odds.

Though, in the scheme of things, this is a minor detail. Having already cast Logan Lerman as Percy, a 16-year-old boy, in the first film, they certainly couldn’t backtrack and make him 13 instead.

Despite fans’ obvious disappointment in the first film, the sequel was green-lit, and we’ve been promised a much more faithful adaptation. Just looking at the trailer, it already seems that the team behind the film is trying their hardest to make good on that promise.

What do you think of the portrait? Which other characters, objects, or landscapes are you looking forward to seeing?
