#CloneWarsSaved! Years after the show’s cancelation, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been brought unexpectedly back to life.

Fresh from San Diego Comic-Con comes the news that the Star Wars faithful have been waiting for for years: The Clone Wars is coming back.

(What’s that thing about being struck down, but coming back more powerful than anyone can possibly imagine?)

The animated series will return for 12 brand-spanking new episodes, finally wrapping up the adventures of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and the faithful Clone Troopers during the long Galactic conflict. The series will be released exclusively on Disney’s still-unnamed digital streaming service.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars began airing in 2008 on Cartoon Network. The show’s fate was left unresolved after Disney purchased Lucasfilm, with fans dangling on the edge of the show’s unintended cliffhanger.

Dave Filoni, who worked closely on Star Wars: The Clone Wars with George Lucas and later helmed Star Wars Rebels, will return to as supervising director on the final installment.

“Clone Wars was a piece of Star Wars that older fans might have, initially, not taken seriously because it was animated, but that wasn’t a barrier for kids,” Filoni tells StarWars.com. “They loved the clones and identified with them. Ahsoka gave kids a character that was like them — someone their age that was experiencing life’s challenges and learning along the way. Plus, having a new episode each week really allowed us to explore what was going on with the new and legacy characters in a dynamic way, including Anakin and Obi-Wan.

“I think the stories left an indelible impression and, of course, George knew it would,” Filoni adds. “He always knew.”

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will join Jon Faverau’s live-action Star Wars series, also airing on Disney’s streaming service. Another animated show, Star Wars: Resistance will air later this year on DisneyXD.
