Based on what we learned at SDCC, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 4 could be the craziest season yet!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend made its first appearance at San Diego Comic Con this year to hype up its next installment. The fourth (and final) season of the show will premiere on the CW on October 12, 2018. The 18 episode season will be the show’s longest since season 1, with seasons 2 and 3 having 13 episode orders.
The show’s co-creators, Aline Brosh McKenna and Rachel Bloom (who also stars in the show) and a room packed with fans got together to discuss what’s in store for the fourth season, and the show’s grand finale. The room was full of emotion and pride for the end of this little show with a big voice. It was clear that many in the room have been moved by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s strong feminist proclamations and the spotlight which it puts on mental health, particularly borderline personality disorder.
The panel was moderated by series guest star, Michael McMillian, who plays Rebecca’s co-worker, Tim. It opened with a super crazy, super exciting, super exclusive…season 3 blooper reel. Unfortunately, there are no teaser trailers to share for season 4, yet. It’s obvious that they’re trying to keep the details of their finale on a need-to-know basis, but McMillian managed to get some good tidbits, nonetheless. Here are the most interesting things we learned about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 4 at SDCC.
- Unfortunately, we know that season 4 will be Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s last. Before you get too upset about it, though, try to take comfort in the fact that this was completely Bloom and McKenna’s choice. They’ve had four seasons planned from the start, and have always known how the series would end. “The very end, the last scene, has always been the same,” McKenna assured the SDCC audience. “Generally, directionally, we knew what every chapter was going to be.” Bloom added, “we knew the emotional swings. That’s why it’s four, very specific seasons. Because each season has its own angle of looking at the title, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
- So, what will the angle of season 4 be? Bloom had an exciting answer for that one. “This season is all about putting together the pieces. How do I marry the internal with the external? The show’s about happiness. There’s a reason we said, “when’s the last time you were truly happy, in the Pilot. The show’s about inner happiness and how you can externalize that in your actions. That’s what she’s learning about in season 4.” It sounds to us like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 4 will basically be a road map to happiness, so we should probably all tune in!
- Season 3 ended with Rebecca pleading “guilty” to attempted murder with the intention of finally facing the consequences of her actions. While they didn’t confirm whether or no Rebecca will be in prison in the fourth season, they did hint that we’ll see a version of “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago! “A lot of people have requested ‘Cell Block Tango’ and this is the one time that we’ve kind of taken a request into account. This was relevant in a cool way that I’m excited for you to see.”
- Patton Oswalt and his character, Castleman, will appear again in season 4 and he will have a song! Oswalt guested on the show as the creepy security guard in season 2 after famously being a super fan of the show, and even moderating a showcase for them before his appearance.
- Even though Rachel Bloom is both the star and co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, season 4 will be the first time that she has a sole writing credit on an episode.
- Unrelated to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Aline Brosh McKenna has been nominated for an Eisner award in 2018 for her comic book, Jane. When McMillian asked is she was looking to write more comics, she confessed that she’s actually currently working on something! He floated the idea of a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend comic, and they didn’t say no…
- You may still be able to get your fix of Rebecca and friends after the series finale. Bloom said that they will likely still tour with the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend live show after the TV series is over.
- Although the show isn’t coming back until October, the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 3 album (including bonus tracks) will be released on July 21, 2018.
- McKenna and Bloom plan to continue collaborating past the end of the show. In fact, after facing countless rejections when trying to get Crazy Ex-Girlfriend rolling, they had begun writing a movie together. McKenna also mentioned a play version of the TV show and “other ideas,” so it looks like these ladies will be a team for years to come.
- Last, but certainly not least, Rachel Bloom gave the audience a special treat when she sang the season 4 theme song live (kind of)! Check out the video, below.
