MTV reveals a new version of the Ghostface mask designed to update the Scream franchise for a new generation.

It’s officially out with the old and in with the new over at MTV headquarters this week.

You may remember that last year MTV made the controversial decision about doing away with the original Ghostface mask for their Scream series reboot. As to be expected, some fans were completely horrified by the idea, where others understood that an update must be made.

If those opinions were at a standstill they’re likely to flare back up now that we have our first official look, thanks to EW, at the new face of Scream 2015.

In all honesty, this first look still leaves a lot to the imagination. It’s hard to tell from a still photo how the face will actually play on screen or if there’s any movement to it.

It seems to almost have a more rubbery texture to it and less like a plastic mask that sits atop the face. Perhaps this means it might be pliable enough for an actor to manipulate the covering and allow for more expression.

Again though, it’s hard to know with a 2D image.

Head of scripted development, Mina Lefevre, explained earlier that they were going for a Ghostface that was much darker and more grounded in reality. And Bob Weinstein, an executive producer on the original Scream as well as MTV’s reboot, mirrored those sentiments.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter he shared, “The [new] mask itself plays a story element, and that is different from Scream the movie. It ties in specifically to the story. The mask has an importance; it’s not a mask for mask’s sake.”

So perhaps we’re learning more about the plot of the series from this image than we actually know yet.

Scream debuts on Tuesday, June 30 at 10 p.m. EST on MTV.
