If you’re old enough to remember, or just a Netflix binger who likes to catch up on old programs, you may recall that the early 2000’s were a golden age for TV soundtracks. Shows like The OC, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gilmore Girls revolutionized what we came to expect from a typical night of television.

And although the demand for good music surely hasn’t diminished over the years, a lull has formed for really solid television soundtracks.

Well, it looks like Scream music supervisor Andrea von Foerster is trying to fight that trend.

The Scream (TV Series) Soundtrack:

1. Phoebe Ryan “Mine”
2. LIZ “When I Rule The World”
3. Wet “You’re the Best”
4. Ruelle “Monsters”
5. MS MR “All The Things Lost”
6. machineheart “Set This Heart On Fire”
7. Liz Longley “Rescue My Heart”
8. Remmi “Star Spangled”
9. George Ezra “Spectacular Rival”
10. Fleurie “There’s A Ghost”

First and foremost, indie music doesn’t always equal good music. Yes, we all want to be the first ones to discover a new artist or band, but being able to discern what’s truly going to catch on from what’s well packaged is a true talent.

And not everyone has it. Many of the recent soundtracks for bigger franchises, both in television and film, have been mediocre at best but mostly lacking heart. Focusing more on who’s cool and current rather than actually giving listeners a cohesive mix or something that they may actually want to listen to outside of the show itself.

Foerster makes sure to account for that with her first Scream soundtrack. Now everyone’s taste in music is personal. So we don’t want to make any grand sweeping statements here. But this is just a really solid low key mix.

I’ll be honest, I have trouble placing the exact moments these songs were used within the show. I don’t have strong emotional attachments between song, scene, and memory. But I believe that speaks more for the show than for the Scream soundtrack. It isn’t the music itself that’s lacking here.

But a bit of warning, this isn’t really a soundtrack you’re going to feel inspired to blast through your car speakers as you go flying down the hallway on a sunny day.

It is however a perfect soundtrack to listen to on a cool fall day, or background music while you work on paperwork. Just rhythmic enough to keep your body interested, but not so fast that you have to get up and shake it. The only exception to this rule would probably be LIZ’s “When I Rule The World,” which does stick out a bit from the overall vibe.

For those who speak soundtrack, this Scream album is kind of like a mix between The OC: Mix 2 and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Which, let’s be frank, is a hell of a complement. In fact, the only complaint listeners should have is that the mix is only ten songs long.

So well done MTV! Next up, shall we suggest a Teen Wolf soundtrack perhaps?
