MTV has officially confirmed that Scream season 3 will reboot the series with a brand new showrunner and a “royal” executive producer promising a refreshing change of diversity as the series heads into production.

We originally reported that the network was considering rebooting the slasher series but now we have the official confirmation! The reboot will be helmed by Brett Matthews (Vampire Diaries, Supernatural) as Showrunner and Executive Producer.

Additionally, Queen Latifah, Shakim Conpere and Yaneley Arty will serve as Executive Producers for Flavor Unit Entertainment (Life Support, Dear Mama). The third season will feature a new location with a new cast and a full creative reboot.

Bye bye, Lakewood.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein will continue as Executive Producers under Dimension TV. Scream will also feature additional Executive Producers Wes Craven, Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad, with Matthew Signer and Keith Levine as Producers.

The third season was only renewed for six episodes which will hopefully bring a stronger, more concentrated season when Scream returns. The series has struggled with maintaining viewership since season 1 and that unfortunate trend followed into season 2 so we hope a reboot can turn that around!

While we’ll miss the Lakewood Six, it is comforting to know that they’re finally safe from Ghostface.
