Last night’s episode of Scream Queens, “Seven Minutes in Hell,” proved to be somewhat of a boring episode despite a fan-favorite sorta getting the axe!

Scream Queens felt a little slow last night with “Seven Minutes In Hell” taking place entirely at the Kappa House. The episode opens with the final voting and revealing of who will be the new president of Kappa. It turns out it was a tie and Chanel and Zayday must now be co-Presidents, which as you might expect, pisses Chanel off to no end. We later find out that the freak out was actually all part of the master plan from Chanel. She wanted Zayday to win — or so she says. As a way of accepting the co-Presidency Chanel gives Zayday a key to the basement, where later events in the episode go down.

Now that Zayday is President, she wants to start doing things her way and she insists that the Kappa girls have a slumber party. And what’s a slumber party without a good old fashioned game of spin the bottle, right? Chanel No.3 really wants to play so that she can have a moment to kiss Sam, the other lesbian in the group. But, the game doesn’t get too far along when someone locks all of the girls in the Kappa house. Not only are the doors locked but all of the windows are sealed shut as well. Hester notes that this must be the Red Devil’s plan, and right on cue, the lights go out — a dream scenario for a masked murderer!

Luckily we have Chad who rushes over to the Kappa house to save Chanel after admitting to the bros that he has hooked up with Dean Munsch and Security Guard Denise. Chad breaks the glass, saves Chanel, but it isn’t enough for poor, old, armless Caulfield, who had a much harder time getting up the ladder. As a result, the ladder gets knocked over, and the Red Devil finishes what he started by golf club swinging an axe and knocking Caulfield’s head right off. We weren’t clear if he had died in a previous episode when he had his arms cut off, but this time around we’re pretty certain he’s gone for good.

Despite seeing someone getting their head chopped off by a man with an axe, the group inside the Kappa house thinks its a good idea to continue on with the game of truth or dare. After a debate about whether or not Chanel No.5’s vagina has teeth, it’s Sam’s turn. Sam confesses to the group that No.3’s father is Charles Manson — a secret she promised not to tell. No.3 banishes Sam to take a nap in the bathtub in the basement as a dare. Sam meanders down and sure enough who’s there to greet her but the Red Devil. After the Red Devil knocks Sam’s head into the bathtub, she deliriously asks to reveal who he is. “I knew it was you,” mutters Sam before pleading for her life as she’s getting suffocated. This scene was interesting because it might be the first piece of evidence that we have that we could potentially track back through previous episodes to come to a conclusion about who the killer may be. It made us want to rewatch the first five episodes to see if Sam gave us any clues or hints in her dialogue about who she thinks is the killer.

On to yet another slumber party game: seven minutes in heaven. For Chad and Chanel, it was a reconciliation of their relationship (sorry, Hester!). Chanel makes Chad pinky pledge that he will be monogamous with only her and he accepts. For Chanel No.5 and Roger, things don’t go quite as smoothly. As Roger is rambling about his murdered brother, the Red Devil sneaks up behind him and shoots him with a nail gun right in the temple, and subsequently all over his face. While this is happening, the group has discovered Sam’s body in the basement where they take turns blaming and accusing each other about being the killer.

The group returns to the closet to find Roger’s dead body. Miraculously, Chad randomly found a trap door that lead to an underground tunnel that the Red Devil must have used to escape. Zayday and Chanel decide, as leaders, it’s their duty to go down and investigate. As you might have guessed, they get trapped by the Red Devil and Zayday nearly gets killed yet again. But, not before Chanel comes to her rescue by knocking Red Devil out with a lamp of some sort.

The next day, Dean Munsch and the stupid cop that doesn’t get anything done are meeting with the Kappa girls in the house. Grace gets a text from Pete saying he’s done studying now and asks her if she wants to make out. Given that this is the next day, we don’t think there’s much significance in the timing here, but Grace gives her phone a troubled look. Right on cue, her Dad swoops in and insists that she leaves the Kappa house. Grace doesn’t budge and demands that she stay with her sisters in a time of need. Her Dad isn’t having it, but eventually gives in.

In the final scene of the episode, which has been a big cliff hanger from episodes past, Chanel gives the Kappa girls pink nun chucks as means of protection. Zayday, on the other hand, thinks that the best thing to do now is to have a dance party. A dance party? That’s how we’re ending this episode? It felt like the writers had no real ending to this episode, so they just threw in whatever they thought could be an easy transition into the credits. The dance party really felt like symbolic to the rest of the episode, which left us kind of bored compared to the last few.

As mentioned, this episode fell flat, but as with any television show, not every episode can be a home run. Just when Scream Queens felt like it was finding its rhythm, pace and tone, it spends and entire episode playing party games and not really developing the story or characters all that much. In fact, the most exciting part of this episode was the preview for next week’s episode in which Gigi proclaims that she’s a killer. Okay, is it going to be that easy? Sam “knowing” who the killer was will surely leave super-fans doing as much homework as they can to try to connect the dots. A return to form with the rest of the cast will be very welcomed for next week’s episode.

And another thing to look forward to is that we’re running out of nameless characters to kill off. From here on out, it’s likely that only characters that we know to some level are left to kill. This could be when the season starts getting good, with a lot more at stake as viewers try to solve the mystery of the Red Devil.
