Now that they’ve got their star, it’s time for the Pacific Rim sequel to start figuring out the rest of its cast. Enter Scott Eastwood.

John Boyega is set to star in Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s beloved monster movie that pits Jaeger against Kaiju. The actor will portray the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the original.

Now, according to Deadline, we’re learning Scott Eastwood may be joining him in a “key role.” They’re still in talks, so nothing has been officially announced yet, but it sounds as though the deal is close to being made.

Guillermo del Toro will no longer be directing, but considering that responsibility is falling on Stephen S. DeKnight’s shoulders, fans are resting easy. After all, he did a fantastic job with Daredevil season 1. del Toro is still producing.

Scott Eastwood is, of course, the son of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood and is known for such films as Gran Torino, Fury, and The Longest Ride. You can also catch him in couple of big upcoming movies, including Furious 8 and Suicide Squad. Interestingly, Eastwood’s roles appear to be unknown in both of these films.

Pacific Rim, which starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman, told the story of the Kaiju, which arose from the sea and waged war on the human race. “To fight the Kaiju,” the synopsis continues, “mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind’s last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot (Hunnam), an untested trainee (Kikuchi) and an old, obsolete Jaeger.”

Pacific Rim 2 will hit theatres on February 23, 2018.
