2012 was host to a number of great science fiction flicks – The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and Looper, among others. But what can we fans look forward to in the upcoming year?

Here are my picks for the top 10 sci-fi films to look forward to:

10. ‘Pacific Rim’

A giant alien attack from under the ocean forces humanity to retaliate using giant manually-piloted robots? Even if this movie has a terrible plot line, it’s bound to be visually stunning and awesome to watch.

9. ‘World War Z’

In the film version of the post-apocalyptic novel, Brad Pitt is a UN employee trying to fight the outbreak of a zombie pandemic. This film is sure to be a huge summer blockbuster – who doesn’t love a good zombie flick?

8. ‘R.I.P.D.’

A recently-killed policeman joins the Rest in Peace Department – an organized group of undead cops – seeking to solve his own murder. With Ryan Reynolds cast in the lead, this comic book adaptation is already shaping up.

7. ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

This continuation of the recent Hobbit film is sure to be as much of a hit as the first one, especially with the promise of Benedict Cumberbatch’s involvement. Though, we’re still not sure how they’re going to fill three movies.

6. ‘Elysium’

In the year 2159, people live in two places – the wealthy on a plush space station, and the poor on a ruined Earth. Matt Damon stars as a man seeking to restore equality to this unequal future.

5. ‘Man of Steel’

The highly-anticipated Superman flick is bound to be better than Superman Returns, what with the esteemed director Christopher Nolan’s involvement. There’s no way this will be another DC flop.

4. ‘The Wolverine’

Here’s to hoping that Marvel can remedy the mess they made with the last Wolverine Origins film. This time, Logan’s training with a samurai warrior in Japan; Jean Grey is rumored to be on board, too.

3. ‘Thor: The Dark World’

The highly-anticipated sequel to the first Thor film sees the return of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in lead roles. Plus the addition of Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston, this movie is filled with great actors.

2. ‘Iron Man 3’

The Iron Man franchise has not failed us fans yet – with two great movies under its belt, not to mention the collaboration in The AvengersIron Man 3 is sure to impress the summer audience.

1. ‘Ender’s Game’

Finally, we’re getting a film version of the beloved book by Orson Scott Card. With Harrison Ford cast as Col. Graff, and child star Asa Butterfield as Ender, we can only hope that the movie is as mentally complex as the book.
