In case you were curious, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is just as scary as when we were kids — at least, the big screen adaptation is.

Many of us grew up reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, a book series by Alvin Schwartz. The tales of terror hidden within the pages kept many of us up at night, wondering what was really lurking in the corners of our room. After a big screen adaptation of the books was announced, many of us assumed that terror would have chilled out with the passing of time.

Well, it doesn’t seem like we were so lucky. The first full trailer of the film is here, and it looks like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is just as terrifying as we all remember, and the journey to the big screen did nothing to make those tales less horrifying.

Obviously, one of the biggest question surrounding this adaptation was how they were going to turn a collection of scary stories into one, feature-length film. However, with a crack team of writers led by master storyteller and horror genius, Guillermo del Toro, it’s not surprising that they found a creative way to bring some of Scary Stories’ most iconic frightening tales together into one, cohesive film.

The movie centers around a group of teens who explore an old, haunted house and find a book of scary stories. However, the tales held within the pages aren’t just your average spooky stories, as it quickly becomes apparent that each scary story is a written account of something ghoulish and horrifying that will happen to each of the teens in real life. It’s up to them to figure out what power is behind the book, and how to save themselves from some truly terrifying stuff.

If you grew up reading the books, you’ll notice pretty quickly that some of the most iconic (or disturbing) stories from the series are featured in the trailer. The spiders in the face, the corpse searching for her missing toe, Harold…they all make a terrifying appearance, and we’re so excited to see them on the big screen.

We’re so excited to see how del Toro reimagined Schwartz’s iconic book series into a major motion picture, and that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is around to fascinate (and low-key traumatize) a whole new generation. You can find the original books wherever books are sold, and you can catch the movie when it arrives in theaters on August 9.
