There are only a few days until the intrigue, romance, and white hats grace our screens again! In honor of this blessed event, here’s a quick catch-up for anyone trailing behind, wanting a refresher, or just curious about what happens in the world where Olivia Pope walks the earth.

Honestly, the first half of the season brought the word “finally” to mind over and over again, as events and relationships bloomed that I personally felt long overdue, so I may have used that word once. Or twice.

The season of love

Well, it happened. Olivia and Fitz got together. Finally. Technically, of course, “getting together” in this instance means Olivia confidently turning to the press and using the word “Yes” when asked if she was in fact the President’s mistress. So Liv was finally completely and absolutely upfront about her romantic life. It also means that after four years photos FINALLY surfaced of their affair. Am I the only one who found that hard to believe?

The season of transformation

Many characters have been able to explore new sides this season, but two in particular stood out to me: Mellie and Abby. Mellie has really come into her own and I could not be more thrilled. She has blossomed from a quick-thinking FLOTUS to a terrifying sea kraken and ended as an empowered goddess who filibusters with reckless abandon.

We’re getting to see her in a new capacity, in a very Olivia-like capacity, and I mean…. finally. Abby on the other hand is taking on new roles, and while I truly believe she’s done the best that she could (considering Fitz wanted to fire her for doing exactly what she was told to do), I have to admit I think she deserves more. We got to see her be “the fixer” for Olivia in “Paris is Burning,” and finally be featured using her mad skills. Hopefully we can see more!

The season of Oh God, David Rosen, get your love life together

I like David Rosen. I’ve liked him ever since he was trying to rustle up dirt on the OPA gang in season 1. But for the love of God, man, you don’t give a woman jewelry intended for another woman after the first woman turns it down. And you especially don’t let the second woman stay in the dark while the first woman makes fun of her. However, I appreciate the writing for Rosen finally developing in a personal character arc for the first time in what seems like forever.

The season of this should probably have happened a long time ago

What with Olivia and Fitz’s new dynamic at the start of the season, a few things changed for Scandal’s power couple. For one, Olivia ended up in jail, something I expected to happen in the first season, frankly. You can only expertly play the system for so long, and it finally caught up with her. Fitz gets her out, of course, to move her into the White House, something that I expected far sooner as well. Soon enough, she gets accused of being the acting President behind the scenes, seeing as Prez Fitz listens to and basically takes every word she says as law. To which I say… Olivia Pope as president?
… Finally.

Of course, there is plenty that was left hanging at the winter finale. The power couple appear to have gone their separate ways, Olivia is hiding big secrets once again from Fitz as well the rest of the world, Olivia’s frightening father is left being… oddly fatherly (though not to Olivia), and Cyrus was sadly absent after leaving me wanting more of his fabulous, morally ambiguous partnership with Mellie.

Were you missing Cyrus in the last episode? Are you as frustrated with David Rosen as I am? Are you heartbroken over Olitz’s “off-again” status?

What do you think about ‘Scandal’ season 5 so far?
