Scandal season 4, episode 6 found Olivia getting duped during the case of the week, but at least she got one thing right tonight: Jake’s safety.

Our recap of Scandal season 4, episode 6 breaks down the events of an episode in which Fitz received a new lease on his relationship with Olivia, and Mellie met a very influential woman.

Tonight’s Scandal kicked off with Olivia experiencing a fantasy during which she’s having sex with both of her men. It’s total fan service.

Unfortunately, Abby snaps her out of the dream. With Olivia in distress, Abby goes to Fitz to ask for information about Jake’s whereabouts. When he gets angry she would bring up such a personal topic, Abby reminds him, “I’m not asking the Commander in Chief, I’m asking the married man who used to sleep with my friend.”

Fitz comes through for his (former?) lover. He makes a personal appearance at her front door. (“Falcon’s in the nest,” one of the secret service reports into his microphone. Funny on multiple levels.).

And then this great moment in which Olivia sticks up for all women:

Fitz: “Abby’s kind of a bitch.”

Olivia: “Don’t say that! If she was a man you’d say she’s formidable… or bold… or right!”

Their conversation goes nowhere. Later, Fitz and Rowan meet in the Oval Office with a glass of liquor. Rowan asks that he be allowed to handle Jake himself, but Fitz wishes to bring him to court and have him executed. “Don’t let love cloud your judgement,” Rowan asks of the president, which is funny since Rowan is the one doing all the manipulating.

At Rowan’s suggestion, Fitz lets Olivia get a face to face with Jake where he’s in his holding cell. The first thing Jake asks is that she makes sure his money in an offshore bank account goes to his mom. He’s certain he’s going to die.

Jake knows that Olivia won’t believe him even if he says he’s been framed — but wait, this sounds familiar to the case of the week (discussed below), doesn’t it? It doesn’t matter though, because Jake has accepted that Olivia is truly in love with Fitz.

David tells Olivia that Jake has been moved to a different jurisdiction, meaning that Rowan will have control over him. She goes to Fitz the night of Cooper’s funeral to beg for mercy. Fitz, always concerned about his relationship with her, thinks that there is no chance of them ever getting back together because too much has happened, but Olivia implies that there may be a chance if he doesn’t give Jake over to Rowan.

It works. Fitz transfers Jake to “super max,” where he’ll be out of Rowan’s hands.

“Consider it my gift to the woman we love,” Fitz tells Jake.

Rowan is pissed at Olivia that she made this happen. “I have weapons you can’t possibly possess,” she tells her dad. That weapon? Love.

Mellie’s new lady

Mellie plans a funeral for President Cooper — who we learn has just died — while Fitz mends his hand after beating Jake to a pulp. Cooper, viewers learn, was the victim of an assassination attempt while he was president many years ago.

The shooter goes to Olivia after Cooper dies to ask that she help prove he was framed as the assassin. Why is he asking now? Because now that Cooper is dead, they can extract the bullet from his head and prove him innocent.

Meanwhile, Mellie meets former First Lady Cooper, and once the media leaves the room, Ms. Cooper opens up. It turns out she’s super cool. Her husband was disloyal to her too, and she’s not interested in Mellie’s help planning the memorial. But Mellie really likes how they can relate.

Meanwhile, Olivia comes up with an idea: Get the White House to press charges against the supposed assassin. She works her magic and gets Fitz to agree to press charges. Now, it’s time to go to court and prove him innocent (with that bullet!).

A judge orders the autopsy, clearing the way for Carnihan to potentially be cleared of the crime. David suddenly catches on to what’s happening when he spots Olivia in the court room.

Forensics come back on Cooper’s bullet, and it proves that Carnihan undoubtedly shot Cooper. Carnihan’s messed up reason for asking Olivia to secretly help prove him definitely guilty? He wanted to go down in history as the man who indisputably shot the president.

Elsewhere…

– Cyrus’ prostitute takes some info out of the Chief of Staff’s phone about shutting down military bases and brings it to Elizabeth in exchange for a raise. After Lizzy Bear starts the rumors and then Mellie denies them (thus painting Fitz into a corner), Abby discovers that the leak was caused by Cyrus.

– Huck has found a way to spend time with his son: In a video game. But his son and wife doesn’t know it! Meanwhile, Quinn discovers that Katelyn was holding photos of Olivia, which was why the men were after her previously. We love how Quinn has been doing the heavy lifting at Olivia Pope & Associates lately, and she’s been surprisingly much less annoying this season.

Does Olivia really believe Fitz has a chance with her, or is she just doing this to protect Jake? We think it’s the latter.
