Last night’s Scandal season 3 episode was one for the record books, if Twitter was any indication.

Scandal season 3, episode 8 “Vermont Is For Lovers, Too” lived up to its name with surprise twists from Fitz and Olivia’s mom Maya. Let’s start with the highlights.

Fitz has a big gift for Olivia. After more attempts at ignoring her longtime love interest, which included breaking her special president phone, Fitz sends a helicopter for Olivia (and photos of her and her father to tempt her to take the ride). She hops aboard and is brought to Vermont where her and Fitz duke it out about the secrets they’ve kept from one another. But then Fitz has a surprise: The house they’re standing in? He bought it. For them. The happy couple.

Shocked by this, Olivia sleeps with Fitz and they have one of their best sex scenes to date. It is, after all, something Olivia has probably wanted for a long time. A simple home life with Fitz (and maybe the sex, too) free of the stress Washington D.C. has forced upon her.

Maya is serious about seeing her daughter. As teased in previews leading up to this week’s episode, Rowan comes into Maya’s holding cell and tells his wife that Olivia has been looking for her, but he insists that the mother and daughter can’t see one another (why?). After Rowan leaves, she’s obviously upset and willing to do anything to get out of the cell, so she starts chewing through her steel chains until she is freed.

The next day Rowan visits her again, and she’s not there because she stabbed the doctor in the neck then made her escape.

That evening at Olivia’s house, our favorite Pope returns home and hears a voice in a dark corner on the street. Maya comes out, and the two meet for the first time in over 20 years. It’s amazing. Olivia always seems to have someone waiting for her at home!

Elsewhere in the episode, Quinn was keeping Huck from finding out who it was him that killed the security guard in episode 7. We’re nervous about what he’s going to do to her next week.

Lisa Kudrow’s role on the show appears to have come to an end after Congresswoman Marcus has left the presidential race due to her daughter’s set up break-in. Is this the end for the character, or will we see more? If she’s gone, surely another candidate (hopefully not the vice president) will step forward and be Fitz’s lead opponent.
