Tonight’s Scandal season 3, episode 3 will see Fitz and Mellie cancel… “a romantic getaway”?

The official synopsis for Scandal season 3, episode 3 titled “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington” reads, “A Midwestern mom hires Pope & Associates under mysterious conditions that lead to a very dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Fitz and Mellie admit their true feelings for each other.”

A clip released by TV Guide offers a preview of the Fitz and Mellie plot point. In the brief scene below, the couple are in a bunker because a bomb threat has been called in. When Fitz’s attempts to exit are thwarted by the secret service, Mellie tells him, “there goes our romantic getaway.” Watch:

Perhaps Olivia’s presence in this bunker would be more comforting to Fitz, who spent time with his two ladies in this same room during the premiere episode.

Do you think Fitz and Mellie actually have plans to head somewhere romantic, or is Mellie just being sarcastic? It may be in this scene that the two share the aforementioned “true feelings” for one another, and the confessions will be something along the lines of their distaste for each other.

Photos and a trailer for tonight’s episode offer additional glimpses into the storyline which will pick up right after.

The trailer shows a suicide bomber trap Olivia and a group of others. It looks like a very intense episode.

Scandal season 3, episode 3 “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington” airs at 10 p.m. eastern/pacific on ABC. We’ll have a recap up following the conclusion of the episode’s east coast airing.

Note: Scandal will not include guest star Lisa Kudrow this evening. We incorrectly reported earlier this week she would start her guest role on episode 3, but she will actually begin on episode 4 airing October 24.
