The series premiere of How to Get Away With Murder had one more twist up its sleeve after it left the airwaves: Better ratings than Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy.

The new Shonda Rhimes-produced drama starring Viola Davis pulled in an outstanding 14 million viewers on Thursday night, beating out the season 4 premiere of Scandal which welcomed 11.9 million viewers. Meanwhile at 8 p.m., Grey’s Anatomy was watched by 9.8 million during its season 11 opener.

For How to Get Away With Murder to beat out the Kerry Washington-led Scandal is impressive. While many expected the latter to offer a good lead in, no one expected Murder to beat Olivia Pope.

Now the question is: Will the huge Murder viewership return next week? And the week after? Surely the high viewership was thanks in part to a lot of curiosity about what Shondaland could come up with next.
